Dr. Stuart McGill
PhD.
Professor Stuart McGill is a well-known, international lecturer and author with over 200 scientific publications that address the issues of lumbar function, low back injury mechanisms, investigation of tissue loading during rehabilitation programs and the formulation of work-related injury avoidance strategies. He is a consultant to many medical management groups, professional sports teams and athletes, governments, corporations and legal firms. Dr. McGill has won numerous awards including the prestigious Volvo Bioengineering Award for Low Back Pain research from Sweden. At the University of Waterloo, he is the department chair. He also holds other academic appointments, which include the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Waterloo; the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto; and the Southern California University of Health Sciences. He is one of few scientists who are regularly referred challenging patients for consult.
This practical course on evidence based prevention, rehabilitation and performance training of the lumbar spine has the following objectives:
Global:
- To update delegates on the most recent developments in function of the lumbar spine, specifically how it works and how it becomes injured.
- To provide guidance in the application of this knowledge to the clinic, workplace and rehabilitation centre, to reduce the risk of injury to the uninjured and optimize healing of the patient.
Specific:
- To dispel the myths regarding specific prevention approaches and rehabilitation approaches such as stabilization techniques.
- To understand the injury process that is necessary to prepare statements and reports for compensation, etc.
- To understand normal and pathological function to devise optimal treatment.
- To enhance patient assessment and provocative testing
- To obtain experiences in reducing the risk of injury over a wide variety of jobs, through a workshop situation.
- To know which exercises are better for lumbar stabilization, endurance training, etc.
- To arrange better progressions from corrective exercise, to stability/mobility, endurance, strength, speed, power
- To understand the latest techniques for training the backs of world class athletes.
