COURSE DESCRIPTION

Optimal injury management requires a comprehensive and systematic approach to deal with all the potential biomechanical imbalances that may present. From soft tissue dysfunction to dys-functional strength and movement impairment disorders this course will provide you with the tools necessary to optimally assess and manage common injuries in the endurance athlete.

Part 1: Foundations to Injury Prevention, Optimum Health and Superior Performance
A complete approach to facilitate optimal performance requires identifying and determining limiting factors that may inhibit progression and promote injury. The “Foundation” defined = Optimal tissue integrity, mobility, stability, balance, endurance, functional strength, speed and power. Dr. Maxwell will review principles of injury prevention and optimal performance followed by a hands-on session including:

  • self-myofascial release techniques, mobilization and range of motion drills including active isolated stretching, activation and stability drills and functional training. A functional movement screen will be reviewed, discussed and practiced in a break-out session.

A review of current literature and principles pertaining to best management of common injuries seen in the endurance athlete. Each injury will be accompanied by a series of biomechanical faults for which a therapy will be directed, including:

  • myofascial release techniques, joint mobilization techniques including an introduction to Mulligan Concept, and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization.

Part 2: Running Without Limits

Although we all strive to determine the biomechanical insufficiency leading to a sports related injury we rarely identify what optimal running mechanics are, nor do we educate our patients or clients on how changing running movement patterns will reduce risk of injury.

Dr. DeRoche has created and implemented a system of teaching optimal running mechanics to enhance running performance and reduce risk of injury. Integrating the latest evidence on the biomechanics of running, running related injuries, and performance enhancement you will learn why running is a natural and safe activity for all ages if performed with purposeful, improved mechanics.

In this seminar you will learn to identify optimal versus faulty running mechanics. You will walk away with a series of skills and drills to enhance running performance and reduce risk of injury that you can implement with your patients on Monday. You will learn to treat the cause of running related injury rather than treating the symptoms. We will also discuss the latest research and a unique approach on shoe selection and orthotic intervention.
